Samsung Mobile Phone User Interfaces

Samsung Design America in 2009 & 2010

Responsibilities: UX design

Overview

As a UX designer in Samsung, I designed user interfaces for 15+ Samsung mobile phones with various form factors and platforms in the North American market.  The followings are a few examples.

T-mobile Comeback (Dual Screen Flip Phone UX)

The device equipped with dual screen displays. Without opening the flip, users can take advantage of essential media features such as quick text messaging and point & shoot camera though a small external screen. Once the flip is open, users can access a large internal screen where they can fully utilize enhanced multimedia features such as full-size image media player, multimedia messaging, and video camera.

T-mobile Gravity Touch (Full Touch Slider UX)

Gravity Touch is designed to appeal customers who are interested in newly introduced touch interface yet still prefer QWERTY keypad for easy texting. Having two different input methods in a single device brought up an Interesting design challenge. For a simple and consistent experience, it was defined how the screen interface changes according to the main input method. The principle was for most applications to display a landscape mode interface only if the physical keypad is in use. Key applications designed for the device are customizable main menu, gesture based unlock mechanism, application shortcuts, and visual voicemail.

T-mobile Gravity Series (Messaging Centric UX)

Designed for heavy texters, Gravity Series are featuring 3x4 and QWERTY keypads. All applications in the device support both portrait and landscape mode interfaces which work flexibly with both keypads.
