Next eBook UX

Samsung Design America in 2010

Responsibilities: UX design

Overview

Next eBook UX was designed to offer the enhanced reading experience on touch devices, utilizing the digital platform, while recreating the positive emotions users feel from the paperback reading. It also supported Samsung's business strategy to integrate various content types (books, magazines, etc) into their devices and allow customers to have a single access point to all of their content regardless of content type.

Designs

[My Shelf]

My shelf is a highly customizable home screen for eBook application,  providing a single access point to various content including books, magazines, and newspapers. It uses realistic visual cues such as book cover images and their relative size in order to help users easily identify content.

[Interactive Book Edge]

We used the book edge metaphor to provide an easy and quick access to highlights, bookmarks, and notes. Customers use a gesture input (in this case, two finger slide to the left) to view remaining pages and labels on the edge.

[Scrapbook Mode]

In scrapbook mode, customers can tear the entire page or cut a portion of the page to save in Clippings. We used the "page tearing" animation as a visual feedback to user's action.

[Data Visualization]

On the last page of the book, we included a summary page for our suers, visualizing the reading history as well as options to rate and recommend the book.
